Modelling Narrative Writing

A good teacher is like a candle, it consumes itself to light the way for others. This is exactly what my lecturer exhibited as she pretended to be a Grade 3 teacher and my colleagues in turn pretended to be Grade 3 students, as she modeled the steps of narrative writing. This was the hallmark of the lesson. We first choose a title for our piece of writing “My Worst Nightmare”. Who knew Narrative writing would be so fun when done together as a class?  Literacy class was very amusing and interactive as we listened to each other’s ideas. This portrayed that knowledge became more feasible when done together as a class. Brain storming ideas enabled us to be appreciate of each other’s thoughts and to understand that everyone’s input is just as important.

When a lecturer models it is a uniquely powerful strategy. It enables students to emulate what was modeled with remarkable accuracy. Modelling allows students to picture themselves in such a way that causes a precise path created by the lecturer. Modeling the steps of narrative writing has now broaden our knowledge and skills which will prepare us effectively when writing our  individual narrative piece. This class activity was centered around the entire class participating fully helping the lecturer come up with sentences , which lead to paragraphs in order to successfully  complete the piece of writing.

Because my lecturer has modelled to the class it proves that, independently we can perform the task when given. We are now excited as we are looking forward to writing an exceptional piece of course not as third graders. πŸ˜‰

  1. I am in agreement with this post, as I also did not view the teaching of writing in that way prior to this lesson. I initially perceived it to require a highly teacher centered approach because the students needed to gain the knowledge from us, before they could put pen to paper. However, after this lesson I realized that the best way to teach students to write an essay, is to involve them in the process, collectively, from the pre writing stage. Considering how it appealed to and engaged us, as you mentioned, I can only imagine how intrigued and receptive that students would be during this process.
Moreover, pertaining to your comment on modelling as a strategy, I too share your sentiments. I vehemently believe that this is the most effective and motivating way to engage student-teachers in the teaching of writing. This strategy provided me with first-hand experience on some of the activities and the sequence in which a writing lesson should flow.
While the information from your post was quite interesting, I found the video to be an excellent inclusion. It was particularly interesting because it sums up what the lecturer did when modelling the last lesson.

This is indeed a good post. Keep on posting!

  2. Prior to this class, I had always viewed the teaching of the writing as a chalk and talk process. After all, this was what I experienced as a student. The teacher said what to do and did not model "what to do." This lesson brought new insights to my writing schema on how the teaching of writing is done.

Social Learning Theory, theorized by Albert Bandura, posits that people learn from one another, through observation, imitation, and modeling. Therefore, it is quite fitting for teachers of writing to model the writing process which begins with the prerewriting stage and ends with publishing. If i see it, I can do. Do not tell me show me are some thoughts that may cross students mind when using the direct instruction approach to teaching writing or any or any other skill. While some students may not have issues with the direct instruction to the writing process, there may be students who may find this approach to writing difficult and consequently fall behind. The modeling approach takes into consideration All learning styles. All stages must be modeled to allow students the opportunity to imitate good writing skills. Modeling the skill is the driving force behind good writing and teachers must be cognizant of that fact.
Therefore teachers of writing must model!, model!, model!

  3. I must say miss surely enlightened us at class with her modeling. Before this, I always pictured the teaching of writing to be teacher centered, where the teacher gives the ideas and takes total control of what is written on the board. With the knowledge now and being actively involved in the class, its quite safe to say that when the children are involved in the process, it may lead to them appreciating each others' thoughts and the lesson being more interactive as described in this blog. We should not only model writing the final piece but also the process from pre-writing to publishing. This will enable the students to realise that good writers go through a process and there are no shortcuts. I am in definite agreement with this post as it captured the central theme "modeling".

  4. Very informative post. Your pictures made the post more interesting and showed evidence of the course instructor's efforts in modelling the process of narrative writing. I can see how different ideas are put together as one class in order to produce one piece that every student can relate to. This makes learning more meaningful as students are the ones expressing their ideas and imaginations in this text. Students who may have doubted their ability to write a narrative text may now feel empowered and motivated to try it on their own because they have experienced a text being put together before them as they all helped. Your video further enhanced your post with some more relevant and appropriate information on teacher modeling. Great job!

  5. This was the best lesson this far. The course lecturer did an excellent job of modeling the narrative piece. In addition to what you said, modeling helps the students to deploy appropriate metacognitive processes that will support their own writing. This means that modelling taps into the students prior knowledge to find what they know or do not know in order for them to improve their writing. Moreover, the team did a fantastic job with the explanation of modelling and the use of the visual representations were great as well.

    Job Well Done!

  6. Your piece was nothing short of informative. The video embedded also added substance to this post. I must also admit that prior to this lesson, I was of the view that the teaching of writing should be done through direct instruction, however, going through this lesson made me realize how practical and effective that modeling is in teaching writing. Many at times we as teachers tell our students what to do but do not show them how to actually go through the processes step by step.
Engaging the students this way will assist them tremendously in making strides to becoming great writers.

  7. Your ability to vividly portray the activities of the day's session is admirable and should be commended. The importance of a teacher modeling those skills that he or she wishes for his or her students to apply in their writing can never be overstated. I agree with the sentiments shared on the benefits on modeling and look forward to continuing this journey with you as you allow us to live vicariously through you.

  8. I must admit that writing is one of my weaknesses. I must commend the course lecturer for taking time to model to us the different steps on writing. My view of the teaching writing was that is was only teacher centered. Through the sessions I understood that both the teacher and students must be engaged in the writing process. This post was very informative and the video added supplemented the post.Upon returning to the classroom I will model these practices learnt to my students so they can become successful writers. 9. I learned a lot during this session. As a visual learner, modelling is one of the strategies used by my teachers which helps be grasp concepts quickly. So, when the lecturer modelled narrative writing, I was more than happy to have been part of this class. I learned aspects of narrative writing which were foreign to my memory of writing. Such as problem and solution and theme.
